Fairfax County Wants You to Claim Your Unclaimed Money

According to the Fairfax County Web site, each year the Fairfax County Department of Finance works to return more than $1 million of unclaimed property to its rightful owners. This unclaimed money may be the result of a check being returned to the county as undeliverable or a check that has not been cashed after a certain period of time.

If you think you have some unclaimed money you're encouraged to check on unclaimed funds through a free online service offered by the county.

Each year more than 80 percent of these funds are successfully reimbursed. However, if the Department of Finance is unsuccessful in finding the rightful owner, a report, along with the money, is submitted to the state of the owners’ last known address. To find out if you are eligible for the funds submitted to the commonwealth of Virginia, visit www.vamoneysearch.org/.
